Professor Vladimir E. Guterman created the laboratory “New materials for electrochemical energy sources” in 2006 at the chemistry department of Southern Federal University, after his three-year period of research for Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (South Korea).

Platinum-based carbon and non-carbon supported catalysts as well as the relationships between their chemical composition, crystal structure, catalytic activity and stability are the main research topics of the laboratory.  Both potential promising use of Pt-based materials in Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFC) and fundamental structure-properties intersections for theoretical predictions are important and significantly stimulate the interest to these scientific directions.

In 2006, a few post-graduate students and students (Larisa L. Visochina, Andrei V.Guterman, Sergey V.Belenov, Tatiana Lastovina, Elena Mikheikina-Pahomova, E.Fokina, M.Lisenko and others) started to work at the laboratory. The interdisciplinary style of research approaches based on a number of modern methods for complicated nanostructured materials study. Attractive opportunities with respect of scientific investigations let establish productive collaborations with colleagues from the physical department (Dr.Yu.Kabirov, Dr.N.Prusakova, Dr.I.Leontiyev), their active role at the very beginning helps form the lab.

Laboratory has a fast start, although a lot of tough work performed due to the lack of modern equipment, direct experience in the field of some the youngest group’s members. The lab gratefully remember the kind help of Incormet Ltd. (Dr.O.Ivaschenko).

In 2007, the joint financial support (SFU, DSTU, Moscow Power Engineering Institute) by Rosnauka-agency had been granted. It gives a chance to improve instruments, to perform some equipment’s upgrade. In 2008, the lab’s research project (“Specific catalytic activity prognoses and high-active Pt/C and PtMe/C nanostructured electrocatalysts synthesis for low temperature fuel cells”) was written and submitted, it was successfully approved by Russian Foundation for Basic Research (RFBR) №08-08-00869-а.

At the beginning of the laboratory development as a research unit the major help received from SFU’s internal grants, UMNIK and START-programs support. In 2010, the official status of the lab was confirmed by the provost of scientific branch of SFU (E.K.Aidarkin) – a paper regarding scientific educational center had been signed. From that period the name of the unit is “Chemistry and physics of functional and nanostructured inorganic materials”, the “core” of the unit is the group “New materials for electrochemical energy sources”.

The most significant steps since 2006

Since 2014, thanks to internal research grant of SFU, new possibilities are becoming real – equipment and research conditions are improving, there are new potential topics and ideas for further development in the group. The collaborations with colleagues from physical department are strong and productive, the joint research together with Professor L.Bugaev’s group (theoretical and computer physics). The international collaborations are in progress too – joint project, supported by RFBR gives the opportunity to work with colleagues from Tongji Univeristy (China). The laboratory is always under development stage in the sense of open minds for research and interesting projects both for applied and pure sciences. We are always open for collaborations: scientists and PhD-students for joint projects are very welcome!
